“I…I have to talk to my sisters.”

Ryder nodded soberly. “All right. We’ll do that. Where are they?”

“I don’t know.” When Ryder did not immediately respond, she continued, “I need to go to Winsome, Texas.”

“Why Texas?”

“That’s where this all began. My mother was born in that area. Meredith went there to find out more about my mother’s beginnings so she could find out more about herself. That’s where she’ll be until she learns all she wants to know.”

“She may not still be there. You’d be taking a chance. She—”

Halting abruptly when he heard the undisputable howl of a wolf, Ryder gritted his teeth and said, “There it goes again, dammit! Pop said there aren’t any wolves in this area. I don’t know whether to believe him—”

“—or me.” He had looked down at her when she finished his statement. “I told you, the howls are warnings that only you and I hear, Ryder.”

“Justine—”

“You saw the wolf crouching beside me when I was unconscious. He was protecting me.”

“No, he—”

“He was protecting me whether you want to believe it or not! I’ve heard those howls before, when I was younger and felt frightened. They consoled me, and then I saw—”

“—a wolf.”

“No, I saw someone else.” Haltingly, she related the story of the old man who sometimes appeared in her dreams.

“We have to get to the bottom of this,” Ryder responded. “There’s only one way.”
